Frequently asked questions

  • What is the school's admission process?
Our admissions process is tailored to the needs of your family. This helps us get to know you, your child, and their interests and aspirations for the future.

As part of the process, you’ll need to complete our online application form. You’ll also need to submit school reports from the last two years, medical documents, and passport information. Your child will sit an age-appropriate assessment, too, which will depend on the grade they’re joining and the information you provide on your form.

Our friendly admissions team will walk you through the process. They can also answer any questions you may have. Start your conversation here by filling in our short enquiry form.
  • How much are your school fees?

At The British International School Shanghai, Puxi, we strive to make sure our tuition fees are as inclusive as possible.

Our fees cover your child’s academic teaching, which is delivered by exceptional educators who expertly personalise each class and activity to individual needs, interests, and goals. Exclusive collaborations with MIT, The Juilliard School, and UNICEF, bring learning to life in exciting new ways, while our extensive enrichment programme enables every student to develop their talents and do what they love.

Find a full breakdown of our fees on our dedicated page.

  • What is the purpose of the application fee?
As part of our admissions process, you'll need to pay an application fee. This covers the administrative cost of the assessment our teachers will undertake with your child.

With almost 1,000 enquiries for school places every year, the fee also allows us to identify those parents who are most committed to sending their children to our school.
  • How long does the admissions process take?
From the moment you first get in contact with us to the point when we consider offering your child a place, the process should take no longer than two weeks. This does, however, depend on how fast you wish to apply, your needs, and your schedule.
  • Is the process different if my company pays the fees?
Our aim is to make the tuition fee payment process as straightforward as possible. In the event that your company is paying your school fees, our admissions and finance teams will liaise directly with them, allowing you to concentrate on your child’s education and well-being.
  • Is there a waiting list?
Possibly, it depends on the year group you’re applying for. Our admissions team will inform you at the time of application if there is a waitlist, and also the likelihood a place will become available.
  • Can my child start in the middle of a term?
Yes, absolutely, you can apply to join BISS at any time - we accept new students all year round and our teachers are experts and helping new starters settle in. That said, we do advise families to try and join at the start of the school year (every August), if possible.
  • Are children assessed as part of the admissions process?
Yes, as part of the admissions process at BISS, your child will need to sit an age-appropriate assessment. These include in-class observations in the Early Years and English and Maths testing at Secondary level. We may also invite you to an interview with the Head of Primary or Secondary (which can be done online if you're not in Shanghai at the time).
  • When was BISS founded?
