THE MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME (IB MYP)

The Metropolitan School of Panama is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering the Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) in Middle School and the first two years of High School. The MYP combines outstanding research and teaching practices from international models, expertly preparing our Grade 6-10 students for the challenge of the prestigious IB Diploma Programme.

THE IB MYP AT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL IN PANAMA

The Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) is a five-year curriculum taught between Grades 6-10 of Middle School and High School at the MET.

The IB MYP broadens our students’ thinking and encourages them to draw connections between important concepts and real-world scenarios. It provides a framework that creates global citizens with international perspectives, universal human values, and cultural awareness. Students also make transdisciplinary links that transcend individual subjects. This develops critical academic skills and a deeper understanding of international issues.

As part of the IB continuum of programs, the IB MYP builds upon the knowledge, skills, and attitudes developed through the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). It also prepares students at our Middle School in Panama City for the IB Diploma Programme, which is widely regarded as the world’s leading pre-university course.

THE IB MYP FRAMEWORK

The IB MYP nurtures our Middle and lower High School students’ subject-specific knowledge and interdisciplinary understanding. The framework includes:

Approaches to Learning ATL): Students learn how to learn by developing skills for research, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management.
Key and related concepts: Students explore big ideas that matter.
Global Contexts: Students understand the relevance and importance of their study for common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet.

THE IB MYP SUBJECT GROUPS

The IB MYP consists of eight subject groups that provide a framework for learning. These subject groups are:

Language and Literature (in the student’s first language)
Language Acquisition (in their second language)
Individuals and Societies
Sciences
Mathematics
Arts
Physical and Health Education
Design

THE MYP GLOBAL CONTEXTS

Through the IB MYP at MET Panama, students explore six Global Contexts. These give our young people an understanding of other people, places, and cultures – and their role in society. The Global Contexts are:

Identities and relationships
Personal and cultural identity
Orientations in space and time
Scientific and technical innovation
Fairness and development
Globalizations and sustainability
